Bumblefoot in pet rat – please help?!?
Posted By Elza on July 30, 2009
I have a 2 year old pet rat. He has struggled with bumblefoot despite all the changes to his cage, regular thorough cleaning of cage, using echinacea drops, various antibiotics and metacam to reduce the swelling. Also tried Blu-Kite (natural substance used on horses). The hind legs themselves (despite treatement and one flushing) are very swollen now and the sores themselves never heal up now. Also, he is starting to get a head tilt. The vet feels the infection has spread throughout his body. Despite all this he eats and drinks well, but just hobbles out of his tube every now and again for food, treats etc. The vet feels its time to put him down if the latest course of tablets don’t work. Please could you help with SERIOUS opinions only please. Thanks.
From what I read here you have tried every trick that one can find on the internet, and like most other rat keepers you are finding that nothing is working :*(
But I’ll bet you haven’t tried a holistic treatment yet?
Combine 1 drop of tea tree oil to 10 drops of distilled water in a small bottle. Shake the bottle and keep handy. Shake before each use and rub a drop of the mix into the Bumbles twice a day. Make sure your boy doesn’t lick the TTO mix.
There is still much hope for your boy to improve his health even though he is an old man. Just talk to Chuck at my group Holistarat http://groups.yahoo.com/group/holistarat who used holistic treatments to help his old, ailing, rat named Gus, to live to beyond 3 years old in comfort.

I am a rat-care expert with 11 years of in-depth experience in the knowledge of rats, both wild and domestic. My expertise lies in their care, their health, and their behavior. I am not only a rat-keeper, but also a rat-breeder (pets only, no feeder breeding for me), and rescuer. I delved into the joy of being a rat-slave at the age of 38. The name "spazrats" is well known, and respected on the rat-only forums to which I belong and/or own, in my home city where I am known as the "Rat Lady" because of my devotion to pet rats, and by those who heed my advice through personal e-mail and on all-pet forums. I have an insatiable desire to learn *everything* RAT and I’m constantly researching and learning more about my one true passion/obsession. I’ve enjoyed the company of over 200 rats in the last 11 years, with over 50 rats in residence at any given time. I know many rat-keeping experts/breeders who have been, and continue to be, my teachers/mentors over the years. It’s their experiences, along with my own experiences, that I enjoy sharing with others, by giving out free advice on rat care.
I’m active on many rat-only forums (founded/own 4 of them). I spend hours a day talking "rats" with other rat-keepers (new owners, experienced rat-keepers, and specialists in rat care like vets, vet techs, and lab techs) on the internet. Come and visit my rats and I at http://spazrats.tripod.com where I’m gathering all of my ratty research and ratty knowledge.
I haven’t had rat or bumble foot experience. However, I would assume that guinea pig treatment for bumblefoot would be the same. Check out Guinealynx.com.
