What can I give my pet rats as treats?

Posted By Elza on March 3, 2010

Hi!
I’m a first time rat owner (though I’ve had several other rodents in the past.)
I was wondering, what kind of natural treats can I give them? They do not seem to like the store bought treats very much.

I am feeding them a complete diet with the pellet blocks and seed/grain mixture rat food. It doesn’t look like they’ve been eating too much of that, either. Can anyone recommend specific brands that rats seem to like?

So, what kinds of veggies/fruit can these little ladies have? :)

Thanks!

Hi! ^-^

Alrighty. So, as you may know, rats will eat just about everything.

But, that doesn’t mean all of that is GOOD for them.
So, heres a few things that you can give your rats that are healthy, and yummy.

Fresh fruits and veggies:

Strawberries

Raspberries

Prunes

Plums

Melon

Apples

Applesauce

Bananas

Grapes

Celery (small amounts, because its really watery)

Broccoli

Squash

Cucumber

Zucchini

Carrots

Sweet Potatoes

Peas (It fun in the summer to put frozen peas in the bottom of a dish of water. Keeps them cool, and they have fun)

Beans. (Research specific beans before feeding them to your rat)

My rats also really enjoy Plain Cheerios. :D

And as for food, I believe my rats eat the "Forti-Diet" pellets. They quite enjoy them.

Good luck!

I really like Oxbow animal foods. I know they have a rat food, and it is basically organic. My rodent pets really like the oxbow treats. I give them freeze dried bananas, strawberries, baked barley biscuts, veggie treats, and alfalfa treats…all made by Oxbow!

Our rats love broccoli, strawberries, blueberries, peanut butter flavored dog biscuits, whole grain cereal or toast & peas. Occasionally we give them a whole nut in the shell, which is a treat & toy @ the same time.

A couple people here suggested cheese, but actually dairy products aren’t good for rats except for an occasional bit of yogurt. Soy milk is ok as a treat & rats are among the few animals who can have a bit of chocolate. Plain peanut butter is too thick & sticky which can make them choke, so it should either be thinned out with water or soy milk, or baked into something.

Good luck with your new girls.
