Is it ok to feed my dog good quality dog food like Wellness but give them treats made by crappy dog food co.?

Posted By Elza on March 21, 2010

Since im feeding my dog all natural dog food like Wellness… would it ok to give them treats made by purnia or other advertised pet treats?

If you have no moral objection to them, they don’t give your dog an upset stomach and you’re not giving him too much or either the treats or the food, it doesn’t matter

Remember, however, that treats should only be given as a reward for good behaviour during a training session and delivered immediately after the positive behaviour has occurred and should be detracted from the amount of food given overall – treats should not be given out willy nilly or in addition to the normal food the animal eats.

Iams or Nutro Max cat food?

Posted By Elza on March 5, 2010

I was wondering which brand is better (cat leaning to Iams by taste). Max has no by-products and less corn if any but the first ingredient is meal, not meat. Iams on the other hand is filled with grains after the first two ingredients, which are actual chicken and then named by-product. Both are around the same price, (Iams is cheaper at times), so choosing is a little tough considering Max is supposedly better than other pet store brands,but Iams seems alright and at least has a form of actual chicken in the first 5 ingredients vs meal(i’m aware of the weighing issue, that’s why i said 5).

Also, if any of you have a suggestion for a similar or healthier food in the same range of money (about 23-26 dollars for 16-20 lbs). It’s easier to stock up in bulk, btw, I’d rather not buy 3 lbs of food every week and spend a fortune.
I’ll be feeding the cat wet food at least 3 times a week :)

Btw, know, I know, some people are going to rant on and on about wet food, or those holistic pet foods that don’t have anything but your beloved soy and meat and grainless things, and believe me, I know they’re better, it’s just the budget. I can’t get 20 dollar tiny bags every two weeks, that’s a quite pricey for cat food.
Thanks guys- I’m probably sticking with Max and I also found Felidae as a nice choice to switch around with Max every once in a while. :)

First, chicken meal isn’t a bad thing (as long as it’s not by-product meal). It’s a real meat source, but it’s added to the mix as an already-dried product. It’s lighter than chicken as it’s got all the water removed. So here is where the ingredients get misleading. Chicken is heavy – it’s full of moisture and water. Since ingredients are listed in order of weight, then the chicken comes first but really isn’t that great because next you have the nasty by-products and corn. The Nutro is really a better choice – chicken meal is much better than unnamed by-products, even if ‘real’ chicken is a first ingredient. The Nutro is better as you’ve got no scrap by-product in there, and it has less corn. Another affordable choice for you is Petsmart’s Authority brand. And if you spend a bit more, consider Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul. Better than the Iams (by far!), the Nutro, and the Authority. Only problem is that the big chains don’t carry it, but the smaller chains do. Might be worth pricing for you.

What can I give my pet rats as treats?

Posted By Elza on March 3, 2010

Hi!
I’m a first time rat owner (though I’ve had several other rodents in the past.)
I was wondering, what kind of natural treats can I give them? They do not seem to like the store bought treats very much.

I am feeding them a complete diet with the pellet blocks and seed/grain mixture rat food. It doesn’t look like they’ve been eating too much of that, either. Can anyone recommend specific brands that rats seem to like?

So, what kinds of veggies/fruit can these little ladies have? :)

Thanks!

Hi! ^-^

Alrighty. So, as you may know, rats will eat just about everything.

But, that doesn’t mean all of that is GOOD for them.
So, heres a few things that you can give your rats that are healthy, and yummy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dried fruits and vegetables:
Carrots
Papaya
Blueberries
Raspberries
Mango
Cherries
Apple
Tomatoes
Pineapple
Raisins
Banana chips
Sweet potato
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fresh fruits and veggies:

Strawberries

Blueberries

Raspberries

Prunes

Plums

Melon

Apples

Applesauce

Bananas

Grapes

Celery (small amounts, because its really watery)

Broccoli

Squash

Cucumber

Zucchini

Carrots

Sweet Potatoes

Peas (It fun in the summer to put frozen peas in the bottom of a dish of water. Keeps them cool, and they have fun)

Beans. (Research specific beans before feeding them to your rat)
~~~~~~~~~~
My rats also really enjoy Plain Cheerios. :D
And as for food, I believe my rats eat the "Forti-Diet" pellets. They quite enjoy them.
Good luck!
PetLife Immune Enhancement Formula
Posted By Elza on March 2, 2010
PetLife Immune Enhancement Formula
The world is filled with disease-causing organisms; the body is filled with defenses to resist them. In fact, no matter what your pet is confronted with, their body is well-designed to fight back. When pets take medications (or eat poisons), the liver produces extra enzymes to detoxify them. Even something as minor as a pulled muscle is swiftly addressed with an increase in blood flow, which brings additional oxygen and nutrients and carts off wastes. The main reason a pet gets sick, according to veterinarians, is that something is interfering with the body’s natural healing powers, the Immune system. The key to good health and healing is a strong immune system, which protects dogs and cats from everything from the flu germs to cancer cells. More than their mainstream counterparts, holistic veterinarians believe that a weak immune system plays a key role in causing disease. Antibiotics fight infection, but they don’t affect whatever weakened the immune system in the first place. This is why holistic veterinarians focus less on things that cause diseases and more on those that affect the body’s defenses. The PetLife Formula is fast becoming the #1 weapon in the veterinarian’s arsenal. PetLife will supercharge your pet’s immune system. Veterinarian Recommended Dosage: 1 cc/per 10 lbs of body weight 3 times daily. Each bottle contains 473 cc’s. Free Ground Shipping! Due to the nature of this product we do not accept any returns.
